Abstract

Purpose: The effect of oral bisphosphonates (BP) on marginal bone loss and implant failure has not been fully examined. The aim of this study was to examine whether the patients who take oral BPs has decreased rate of implant failure and marginal bone loss compared to non-taking groups.

Materials and Methods: This study investigated the patients who had received dental implants and oral BP therapy, in Samsung Medical Center from January 1999 to December 2012. All patients received oral BP before receiving implant surgery, and the patients were grouped as follows: Group 3, 3 years ago; Group 4, under 3 years ago; Group 1, negative control group with healthy patients; and Group 2, positive control group with patients of diabete mellitus.

Results: There were significant decreases in success rate and marginal bone loss for Group 2. No differences were observed between Group 1, 3, and 4 in the success rate and marginal bone loss.

Conclusion: In this study, no significant difference was observed in marginal bone resorption around dental implants, in the healthy group and the BPs taking group.
